The Onshore Partner visa is for applicants who are in Australia, and in a de facto or married relationship with their Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Eligible New Zealand citizen partner.
Overview
There is a temporary and permanent component, and applicants are eligible for a bridging visa that allows them to remain onshore while the visa is processing.
About this Visa
When you apply for a partner visa, you apply for both the temporary and the permanent visa at the same time. The temporary 820 visa is granted first. Then, two years later, you will be eligible to apply for the permanent visa.
The two-year waiting period does not apply to couples who have evidence of a long-standing relationship. For example, if you have been in a de facto relationship for a minimum of three years, or if you have a child, two years.
If you are applying for a partner visa for a de facto relationship, you must have been in that relationship for at least 12 months at the time you lodge the application. The 12-month requirement can be waived if you have registered your relationship in your state or territory. Either way, you will need significant evidence of your relationship.
Bridging Visa
Applicants are eligible for a bridging visa. This enables the applicant to remain in Australia once your current visa expires. You will generally, but not always, have full work and study rights.
To make your application strong, you must be prepared to share all aspects of your relationship, including some very personal details. We can assess your situation and help you select the most appropriate visa based on the nature of your relationship, the length of your relationship, and whether you are currently inside or outside of Australia.
You may be eligible for this visa if:
